About
Völund came up working. You can hear it in every note — not as performance, not as Americana nostalgia, but as cellular truth. The Portland-born songwriter carries grief like a craftsman carries calluses: evidence of a life actually lived, worn openly and without drama. His dark folk and Americana songs have the weight of things made slowly and by hand.
The Norse smith god he's named after was imprisoned on an island and forced to forge treasure for a king who feared him. That mythology runs through Völund's work in ways he's never needed to explain. The songs are about labor and loss and the specific loneliness of men who feel everything and say very little. There is no ironic distance here, no winking at the listener. He means every word.
His live performances have been described, more than once, as genuinely uncomfortable — not because anything shocking happens, but because it is rare to be in a room with someone telling the truth that plainly. The road appears in the songs as a real place, not a metaphor. So does grief.
“Forged in fire and silence.”
